A Great Review from Booklist
Romeo
and Lou received a terrific review from the fine folks at Booklist.
They say, "...children will enjoy the amusing mishaps and
the feeling that they know more than these likable but naive
travelers.
From the unlikely plot to the color, clarity, and comic exaggeration
of artwork, this picture book resembles an old-fashioned animated
kids' cartoon."

“Meet
Jack Frost”
in
Robert's Snow 2007
Derek
is once again donating an original painted snowflake to
Robert's Snow, an online auction of snowflakes
made by hundreds of children's book illustrators that benefits
cancer research.
Derek's
snowflake for this year is an icy portrait of old man
winter himself. It's called “Meet
Jack Frost” and
will be auctioned off this fall. The auctions are held
online
and are open to anyone with internet access and an
interest in owning a cool piece of original art. One
hundred percent of the proceeds from the auctions go
to the
Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute. Since its
inception in 2004, the Robert's Snow auctions have
raised more than $200,000 for cancer research.
So
come on- this
is your chance to own an original
painted snowflake by any one or more of your favorite children's
book illustrators and contribute to the battle against cancer
at
the same time.
The
auctions begin this November.

Derek
to Speak at the
Minnesota
SCBWI
Fall
Conference October 6th
Are
you interested in writing and illustrating children's books?
Do you have a curiousity about publishing and how to get your
story or illustrations noticed? Derek will be speaking at the
Minnesota SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators)
fall
conference on Saturday, October 6th in St. Paul, Minnesota.
You don't have to be a member of SCBWI to attend this conference.
It's open to anyone that's interested.
The
theme of the conference is "Road to Success: From Concept
to Contract" and will feature authors, illustrators,
editors, art directors, agents and an attorney who will be
speaking
about everything from the creation
of stories and pictures to getting your work noticed. Derek
will be delivering one of the keynotes on his own road to
publication and exactly what he did. There will be opportunities
to not only hear speakers, but ask
questions about the things you want
to know.

Little
Quack Goes Dutch!
Our
little globe-trotting duckling continues his
trek around the world with brand new editions of Little
Quack and Little Quack's New
Friend translated into Dutch. That's right!
Ukkie (Widdle), Waggel (Waddle), Piepie (Piddle), Plons
(Puddle)
and Kleine
Kwek (Little Quack) are plopping into the glistening fresh-water
puddles of the Netherlands.
So
far the
Little Quack books have been published in Germany,
France,
South
Korea, the United Kingdom, Spain, Serbia, Canada, and
of course, the United States. And now we can add Holland
to the list! Derek couldn't be more pleased that
his books are reaching kids in yet another country and
another language around the world.
